This was a hard year for Sav. They won 1 game and lost probably 25? I quit counting. But learning to lose is a skill like walking. She finished her 7th grade A team with a better record and some encouraging words from her coach—“
I really enjoyed coaching her. Sometimes coaches forget that these girls are only 7th graders and still have a long ways to go as far as catching up to their body, etc. As I told Savannah last night, she's clearly not going to be the bulkiest of post players, but it doesn't mean she can't make an impact. One of the things I love the most about her is that when we work on something in practice, she actively looks for a way to put it into play in the game. I talked to her about one of my favorite KU players of all time, Danny Manning, and how even though he wasn't the most athletic of players, he was incredibly sound fundamentally. That he would get the rebound, keep it high, and put it right back up. What does your girl go and do in the game? Get a rebound, keep the ball high, and shoot it, miss it, get the rebound, keep it high and shoot it again. Even though she missed both shots, she did EXACTLY what I told her to work on in the future. She just did it. That, to me, is awesome and I love a player who is coachable. She just needs to keep working and not give up! :)”
Good coaches make a losing season FEEL like a win! Thanks Coach Stromgren
